Sacramento Kings Sign Kosta Koufos

After striking out on Monta Ellis and Wesley Matthews, the Sacramento Kings have been making deals. Within the past several days, the Kings have added Marco Belinelli and Rajon Rondo. According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Kings have added their third piece of the offseason.

Kosta Koufos signed a four-year, $33 million contract. The contract will include a player option after the third season.

While the move sounds confusing, as Sacramento arguably has one of the best centers in DeMarcus Cousins and drafted Willie Cauley-Stein with the sixth overall pick in last month’s draft, Koufos may see some time at the power forward position. The seven-year veteran could play next to Cousins or could be his replacement if the Kings decide to move their All-Star center, according to Marc Stein. This moves reunites Koufos with George Karl, as the center played for Karl from 2011-2013 with the Denver Nuggets.

Last season in Memphis, Koufos averaged 5.2 points, 5.3 rebounds-per-game while shooting 51% from the field. In addition, the Ohio State product played in 81 games and started three games. While he wanted to be a starter, his best option was to leave the Grizzlies as the team is expected to re-sign Marc Gasol.
