Free Agency Preview: Boston Celtics

If you’re a Boston Celtics fan, it might be disappointing to know that the Celtics realistically won’t likely get a big name during this off season’s free agency period. With that being said, names such as Kevin Love are likely out the window. Especially since Love expects to re-sign with the Cavs just like fellow teammate LeBron James. Now even though the Celtics probably won’t get a superstar, they can still add some much needed depth to their overall roster.

With the Celtics recently signing forward/center Amir Johnson, they are continuing the search for talented big men. They are even looking at Robin Lopez and Greg Monroe as guys that can bring that big men depth to the team. Lopez would be the less impressive move for the Celtics to make out of the two but least they would get the Lopez brother that can stay healthy — unlike Brook who just recently got a 60 million dollar deal from the Nets. Now as talented as Monroe is it seems such other teams like the Mavericks and Knicks have seemed to show more interest in the former Piston.

The Boston Celtics need more than just a big man, they need a small forward that can contribute on the team on a consistent basis. Nothing against Jae Crowder, but don’t you think the Celtics deserve better than someone who averages 7.7 points-per-game? I think so. Now with DeMarre Carroll taking his talents to the north of the border, the free agency pool for small forwards is kind of slim right now. There has been talks that the Celtics could bring in a few players  including a couple familiar names.

The Celtics are looking at Corey Brewer. I know somewhere Boston fans are hearing crickets right about now after hearing that kind of news. However, Brewer did have some impressive games for a playoff team with the Houston Rockets last season.

Now you’re probably like, wait who are the other two names that the Celtics before had that they could bring back to Beantown? Well the Celtics could go after former slam dunk champ Gerald Green. Now when Green left Boston, that’s all he was known for just a guy that can do flashy dunks. Now he can still do crazy dunk, but he has added a more consistent three-point shot to his arsenal. Remember the Celtics need to add some three-point specialists to their team, looking at Mr. Gerald Green wouldn’t be all that bad of an idea.

Last but certainly not least — the last former name is someone who’s number will most likely one day be retired in the rafters in the Boston Garden, that name being the “Truth” Paul Pierce. I know, this isn’t the same Paul Pierce as years past. In fact, Pierce finished with a career low 11.9 points per game last season. Not sexy numbers by any stretch of the imagination. Both Pierce and the Celtics want number 34 to retire as a Celtic and the chance of that happening aren’t really that far off.

As you can see, with these names don’t expect the Boston Celtics to be a championship contending team. However, being in a weak Eastern Conference they still can be a playoff contending team and possibly finish their season being above .500 unlike last last season. It’s not as if Celtic greats such as Bill Russell, Robert Parrish, Larry Bird and others are going to be walking through the Celtics door. It’s just not going to happen, but any improvement is an improvement nonetheless that can help the Celtics going to the right direction.
